Long answer: It’s not that simple… while Square Online does indeed have a free plan which you can sell on, you will have to pay a fee of 2.9% + 30¢ on every transaction. There are also limited features to deal with, as you’ll have no access to vital ecommerce features like taking PayPal payments or abandoned cart recovery unless you upgrade to a paid plan.

All the builders on this list give you some kind of free access, but to sell and reach each provider’s true ecommerce potential will require paying. There are four different variations of what can be described as a ‘free ecommerce platform’:

Square Online is the only ecommerce platform on this list that actually lets you sell for free. This is a major advantage for those starting a new online business or wanting a fresh start, as the money saved on start-up costs can now be put wherever else they may be needed.

What also sets Square Online apart is its range of POS systems, providing seamless synchronization between online and offline sales. For this reason, Square Online is perfect for food-related businesses, allowing you to sell your products in person in a store or market stall while still advertising your website.

This is what a finished Square Online site can look like. Key West Cocktail Company uses large, professional images which is great for enforcing your brand image.

While Square Online does indeed let you sell for free, it’s not as strong a platform as Shopify and Wix, only scoring 3.6 out of 5 overall in our research. Its design flexibility is very limited, not letting you choose a store theme till you upgrade. While you do get unlimited items to sell on the free plan, you have transaction fees to pay on each sale – 2.9% + $0.30 on each card payment.   • Square Online is recommended if you run a restaurant or business in the food industry. You can use its POS integrations to sync your online and offline sales, making it easy to keep track of all your payments in one place
  • However, avoid Square Online if you run a very large store. Compared to platforms like Shopify, you’ll have fewer ways to sync your store across multiple sales channels

Shopify has the highest sales feature score in our research with 4.7 out of 5. If you are looking for the ultimate ecommerce solution – Shopify may well be it. While it does not have a free plan, Shopify does have two trials new customers can use: one free and one paid.

The free trial lasts for three days, and users will get access to all of Shopify’s store-building features, but you won’t be able to sell till you upgrade. The other trial is paid, costing only $1 for your first month. With this trial, you’ll get full Shopify access and be able to sell, which in our recommendation makes it the better of the two – but you won’t have to choose, as you can use one trial after the other.

Shopify is truly the full package. The aesthetic for this website, Lucky Dog Design, totally suits the product, plus owners can advertise deals with banners.

When you’re on the trial, you’ll get to choose a well-designed and ecommerce-optimized Shopify template. Be warned that most of them cost a one-off payment of between $170 – $320 – but there are 15 free themes.

Shopify’s internal sales and product features are some of the best we’ve tested, with unlimited products, abandoned cart recovery, discount codes, currency conversions, POS systems, marketing automation, and many, many more. Like Shopify, you cannot sell on Wix without upgrading to a paid plan. However, Wix differs in that it allows you to have a free website for an indefinite period of time. The Wix free plan will let you create and design an online store for as long as you want, which is great for really hammering out those final branding choices.

You can choose from over 800 free templates across a range of industries, or use Wix’s ADI to let its AI website builder design a template for you. In our research, Wix scored the highest for design functionality for online stores with 4.3 out of 5.

Wix has great design capabilities across a whole host of templates, even eco-based ones like this website, WasteX.

However, while you can have a free website with Wix, the free plan is beset with limitations. Your site will have Wix ads and a Wix domain, plus a 500MB storage limit – not to mention no selling till you upgrade.

Once you do upgrade, Wix has a solid range of sales features, and you’ll be able to sell up to 50,000 products, send abandoned cart recovery emails, send out branded gift cards, and dropship up to 25 items thanks to Wix’s integration with Modalyst.

  • With its flexible design customization tools, Wix is a great option if you’re selling hand-crafted products online. You can use the editor to design a site that matches your unique style as an artisan
  • Avoid Wix if it’s likely that you’ll want to switch templates further down the line. You can’t switch designs once your website has gone live

  • Ads – On the free plan, Wix places a banner ad at the top of your website, which is quite distracting and looks unprofessional

WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin for WordPress, meaning you will need to download WordPress in order to use it. Like WordPress, it is free to download and use…theoretically. The truth is that you will have to be in charge of finding a hosting provider, obtaining security licenses, and downloading whatever themes and features you will need for your website – WooCommerce doesn’t even come with abandoned cart recovery.

In regards to a hosting provider, we (and WordPress) recommend Bluehost for any WooCommerce online stores, as it has WooCommerce-specific hosting plans that take care of a lot of site management, making it perfect for beginners.

If you know a bit of code you can endlessly edit and add specific features you want to your store down to the finest detail. While both these plans seem great value, remember that a WooCommerce store is not only more work to make but more work to upkeep than a regular website builder.

There’s also the cost of securing your own domain name and all the plugins you’ll need. While a domain can be relatively cheap, only costing $10 – $15 per year, some domains can cost up to the thousands if they’re highly sought after. Plugins can be free to use, but if you are looking for quality then a monthly subscription of around $10 – $20 will be expected, and that’s just for one. Before You Start Creating Your Booking Website…

Here are a few pointers:

  1. Have you established yourbrand identity?: Your brand’s unique identity covers various elements like your name, logo, color palette, and copy. Wix Summary

The best website builder on the market, Wix comes with brilliant features you can use when creating your booking website. Its Wix ADI tool can generate an AI-driven website template based on your needs, while you can also add a number of integrations to your booking page through its bustling app store.

Wix is also a suitable platform for hotels. In Wix’s April Review, it unveiled its new hospitality solution Wix Hotels. If you own a hotel business, you can now accept payments and reservations in one place, or connect your business with popular websites like Booking.com.

Squarespace Summary

Squarespace is a brilliant fit for design-conscious business owners.Boasting the most stylish templates on the market mixed with great design tools and a drag-and-drop editor, this builder makes it easy to look professional online.

It also comes with Acuity Scheduling, a built-in booking system, so you can set up appointments as soon as you choose your template.

Because Squarespace is also theeasiest website builder to use, I recommend this platform for one-person businesses.Even if you have limited time or resources to dedicate to your booking website, setting up won’t be difficult due to its user-friendly interface, and you’ll also encounter some useful onboarding tutorials along the way.

What Do You Need in a Booking Website Builder?

Need help choosing a website builder? If that’s the case, spend some time assessing each platform and exploring the features they offer. Do these features fulfill your unique needs?

Here are some features to look out for:

  • Calendar syncing– Busy schedule? If you anticipate plenty of bookings, then you’ll need a way to showcase your availability. Many scheduling integrations, including Wix Bookings, offer ways to sync your Google Calendars with your website.
  • Streamlined payment systems– To watch the money roll in, look for scheduling tools that let you accept payments online via credit cards, digital wallets, and invoicing.
  • Automations – If your schedule is jam-packed, automations can help you manage it. Search for automations that can speed up the process, like automatic emails that remind customers of upcoming bookings or payments.
  • Staff management tools – Part of a larger business? If so, you’ll need a booking system that can integrate multiple staff members with your website. See if the platform lets you add staff calendars for each member of your team.
  • Video conferencing – If you will be face to face with plenty of remote clients, your website builder must allow video conferencing. Squarespace’s Acuity Scheduling has this feature and lets you integrate Zoom and JoinMe with your booking website.

Which Pricing Plan Do I Need?

To enable Bookings on Wix, you need the Core plan, which is priced at $29 per month when billed annually.It lets you install the Wix Bookings app, offering the ability to offer unlimited services and sync your personal calendars to your dashboard. Overall, it gives you a great range of booking features for a reasonable monthly cost.

On the Core plan, you can send 50 SMS notifications a month to your contacts. However, if you want to send a greater number of texts, you need to upgrade to the Business or Business Elite plans. For instance, the Business plan, priced at $36 per month when billed annually, lets you send 100 SMS notifications a month.

Wix’s pricing page has a section dedicated to its booking features. I was looking for ways to integrate socials and found out that you can connect multiple channels – great if you have pre-existing social media platforms you’d like to connect with your site. Source: Website Builder Expert

Once you’ve bought the Core plan or above, you’ll be able to download Wix Bookings from the app store and integrate it with your website!

But what about Squarespace? Our research shows that its plans are great value for money, varying between $16-$52 per month when billed annually.However, for a professional business page where you can take bookings, I recommend the Business plan at $23 per month when billed annually.

It comes with great ecommerce features that will complement your bookings page nicely. For instance, customers will be able to create accounts on your website, while you can create pop-ups and banners to promote new services you offer.

To access bookings, you’ll need to purchase Squarespace’s Acuity Scheduling tool, which comes at an additional cost. Ranging from $16-$49 per month when billed annually,you’ll be able to sync your calendars with your website and set up your payment settings.

I saw that all of the Acuity Scheduling plans come with invoicing and automatic reminder emails. Since all of these tools are in one place, I felt confident about managing my booking website through this tool. Source: Website Builder Expert

Squarespace Acuity’s cheapest option, the Emerging plan, is ideal if you’re at the helm of a one-person company.This means you might hold appointments or classes, run regular services such as live entertainment or beauty treatments, or frequently hold meetings for your freelance business.

However, you may need the Growing or Powerhouse plan if you’re a part of a wider team. For instance, the Powerhouse plan, at $49 per month when billed annually,lets you set up multiple time zones for different staff members and locations – great if your operations are run in multiple areas!

2. Create a Domain Name

At first glance, a domain name may only seem like a small aspect of your website, but it’s much more than that. It’s the main way users will find you online.For that reason, you need to come up with a memorable primary domain to make sure your page is accessible for  public use.

Though most website builder plans come with a free domain, these typically last for one year only. Once your plan has run out, the domain will be charged. These prices can range from $20-$70 per year, depending on the platform you’re using.

For more flexibility with your pricing, you can research different domain name registrars to see who offers the best deals. Domain.com is a great example. On its website, I found offers for various domains that would suit a variety of businesses. For instance, a classic “.com” domain is $11.99 for your first year, but rises to $21.99 per year at renewal.

How Do I Create a Strong Domain Name?

Now that you know where to get a domain from, it’s time to choose a strong domain name.

This section will be most relevant to you if you haven’t come up with a business name yet. If you already have one, it’s best practice to make this your domain too, since you most likely have an existing customer base who are already familiar with it.

Without further ado, here are four tips to creating a strong domain name.

  1. Is it short?The name “www.thisisaveryverylongwebsitename.com” isn’t particularly appealing. Though it does exactly what it says on the box, it will be tedious for users to type out. Instead, think of iconic brands like “ebay.com” or “www.levis.com” – short, sweet, and memorable.
  2. Is it catchy?Like you would with a jingle or a tagline, make sure your domain is catchy so website visitors will remember it. As an example, “pinterest.com” is memorable as it blends the words “pin” and “interest” to create something entirely unique!
  3. Is it easy for users to type out? To ensure users can easily type out your domain, ignore numbers, hyphens, and too many similar letters.
  4. Does it have a keyword?Depending on your industry, you could try to add a keyword to your domain. For instance, if you’re a yoga instructor, you’ll probably want the word “yoga” somewhere.

3. Pick and Customize Your Template

Now for the fun part: your website’s unique design. According to our landing page statistics, your landing page will have a 160% higher conversion rate than other areas of your website. To keep users on your page, ensure that its design is both attractive andeasy to navigate.

Here’s what every strong website design needs:

  • A strong tone of voice – Is your website sophisticated or playful? Authoritative or friendly? Your copywriting should reflect your brand’s identity. To create your tone of voice, think about your target audience and how they’d like to be spoken to.
  • An eye-catching font– What do American Apparel, Jeep, and JCPenny have in common? A distinctive font. In fact, all of these brands use the font Helvetica! To find your ideal font, research current typography trends, see what other brands are using, and then explore which style best suits your brand.
  • Evocative colors – Colors are associated with emotions. Because of this, you need to consider which colors best represent the way you want your website visitors to feel. If you’re offering fashion consultations, you could choose black to evoke luxury or sophistication. Or, if you offer business consultations, you could choose blue for trust and security.

On top of your website’s visuals, you need to add elements to your website that’ll help users find what they’re looking for. If you’re browsing a website builder’s template library, here are some key booking website features to watch out for:

  • Navigation bars –If your booking website has multiple pages – such as “about us”, “services”, and “contact us” –  you need to ensure that users can easily switch between them. The quickest way to do this is by adding a website navigation Luckily, most website builder templates come with this feature.
  • Booking widgets –How do you want users to book services on your website? Whether you want them to fill in contact forms, or click on a calendar on your landing page, look for a platform with a variety of booking widgets.
  • Video Hosting –To showcase your services in another light, you could always add  a video that introduces, explains, or showcases your services. For that, you’ll need to make sure your website builder allows video hosting.

4. Upload Your Website’s Content

Once you’ve chosen your template, you can start filling your website with content. But what should you include? Think about your target audience’s needs and ask yourself whether these features will be useful to them.

I’ve listed some pointers below:

  • About Us Page– Here you can add background information on your brand’s story and mission statement.
  • Services – Showcase your services by creating a bookings page. You can include important details like location, pricing, and dates.
  • Social media links – Already have a Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok account for your business? Add social media icons to your page so users on your website can access these profiles too.
  • Automated chat box– You can’t be at your website 24/7, so it’s worth adding an automated chat box that can respond to messages. Oftentimes, these chat boxes will notify you when someone interacts with your website.
  • Testimonials– Adding genuine reviews to your website builds trust. If previous customers show approval of your services, then more people will be inspired to book a service themselves. You could add customer quotes, star reviews, and even photos (always ask for permission first), or install an app that allows customers to upload their own reviews themselves.
  • Privacy Policy – Comply with website regulations by adding a Privacy Policy to your website. It tells users exactly what you intend to do with their information.
  • SEO targeted copy– When writing your website copy, ensure you’re targeting the appropriate keywords. For instance, if “nail art” is your unique selling point, then you need to make sure this keyword is in your website headings and service descriptions.

5. Install the Booking Integration

Depending on your website builder, there are different ways to add appointment functionalities to your page. Since we’ve mentioned Wix and Squarespace already, here’s how you can add bookings to both platforms.

Wix Bookings

Setting up Wix Bookings was easy – I went onto the app store and installed the tool in one click. Afterwards, Wix redirected me to my dashboard, where I could now access a new “catalog” section. Here, I was able to add new services onto my website, from private appointments to group sessions.

For my fitness bookings website, I could add new classes from scratch or by editing the different kinds of services listed on the page. These suggestions were all relevant to my test website’s business, like the personal training and open gym! Source: Website Builder Expert

Once I had added my services, I could explore a myriad of other features. I could click on the “bookings calendar” tab to see my work schedule, set up and manage the work hours of staff members, and edit my default hours so customers know when I’m available each week. All of these features will help you manage your business effectively, so you can run each service without a hitch.

Acuity Scheduling

In contrast to Wix Bookings, Acuity Scheduling is already built into Squarespace. In other words, you don’t need to install an app to set it up. After I had chosen my template, I located the “Scheduling” tab from the left sidebar and began to fill in details such as my scheduling page URL and first appointment type.

I was taken through a straightforward, step-by-step process, beginning with naming my scheduling page to entering my availability for each week. All of the key features, such as appointment invoicing and client lists, are kept in one area of your website, so it’s really easy to organize and maintain your business over a long period of time.

Is There Anything Else I Should Set Up?

Before you dive into testing and publishing your website, double check to see if you also have these key features installed:

  • Do you have payments enabled?If you’re offering paid services, you need a way to accept payments online. For instance, both Wix and Squarespace have their own all-in-one payment solution, letting you accept payments from major credit and debit card companies. Wix gives you the widest variety of payment options, with over 80 payment methods worldwide.
  • Are you offering gift cards?If so, Wix Bookings lets you sell gift cards from your website. Customers can purchase custom amounts and send them to friends and family, enabling the recipient to book one of your services. Meanwhile, you can’t get gift cards with Squarespace, but you can offer special packages for clients. As an example, you could offer their fifth booking for free after four appointments.

So you’ve spent hours putting your website together and it’s almost time to hit publish. But before you do, there’s one step you can’t avoid: testing your website. This will help you spot any website errors that could negatively impact users, and gives you time to smooth these problems out before going live.

These are some areas of your booking website to keep an eye on:

  1. Is your website slow?According to our website load time stats, 82% of consumers say that slow loading times impact their purchasing decisions. With this in mind, don’t forget to test your website’s loading times. You don’t want a customer to feel frustrated and close your bookings page! You can help speed up your website by optimizing images. To achieve this, you’ll need to find the sweet spot between lower file sizes and high-quality imagery, so feel free to experiment with image compressing tools before hitting publish.
  2. Are your pages mobile optimized?With a third of customers preferring to book appointments via mobile, you need to make sure your pages are mobile optimized. If your website looks clunky on smartphones, it’s time to go back to the drawing board. Keep your website mobile-friendly by removing any excess plugins or pop-ups that will clutter the screen, refining your design so it looks sophisticated on all devices, and using a free tool like mobiReady to see how well your website performs on mobile.
  3. Does your bookings system work?Remember to test your bookings system. After all, there’s no point in setting up a booking website if visitors can’t book your services in the first place! Congratulations on publishing your booking website! However, you can’t just stop there. You’ll also need to use an array of marketing tools to grow your business’ online presence. Here are three tools that can help you promote your website:

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

If there’s anything you should focus on, it has to be your website’s SEO. When you create website copy, you’ll need to target the right keywords to ensure your website appears on search engines.

The keywords you choose should be intuitive and relate back to your business. For instance, a private tutor offering singing lessons could target keywords such as “singing lessons,” “singing teacher,” “vocal coach,” or “voice lessons.”

To help you come up with these keywords, put yourself in the shoes of your target audience. Think about what they’d need to search for on Google to find your service.  

For additional help, you could also consult a free SEO tool. My personal favorite is Keyword Surfer, a free extension you can add to Google Chrome. When you enter a specific search query into Google, it’ll show you related keywords alongside their overall search volume – perfect for beginners and seasoned SEO professionals alike!

2. Email Marketing

Keep customers in the loop by setting up email marketing. For instance, if you’re in hospitality, you could set up hotel newsletters and notify your contacts about upcoming events, loyalty schemes, or even seasonal discount codes.

If you opt for either Wix and Squarespace, both of these platforms offer built-in email marketing tools. But if you’d prefer to use a third-party company, like Mailchimp, you could also download an email marketing integration from Wix or Squarespace’s app store.

3. Blogging

If you have plenty of expertise in your industry, consider adding a blogging platform to your booking page. This way, you can showcase your knowledge to your audience and build trust with new website visitors who come across your content.

Most website builders, like Wix and Squarespace, already come with blogging features, so it’s easy to integrate one with your website. With Wix, for instance, I could install the Wix Blog integration from the app store in one click. Once I added it to the site, I could access my blog page from the editor and start creating my first post.

If you opt for a blog, remember to enable commenting and social media sharing. Commenting lets your audience engage with your content and spark industry-related discussions, while social media sharing lets visitors share your work with audiences on other platforms (and who knows who will see it?)

My Experience With Wix

I had no trouble getting set up with Wix – the onboarding process took less than a minutewith the help of Wix’s AI chatbot, creating a tailored website and dashboard based on my responses. If I wanted to choose a template myself, I could filter the 900+ professionally designed templates by industry, such as “Wellness” or “Restaurant”, or simply browse the entire library.

Once in the editor, I had complete creative control – Wix let me drag and place elements wherever I wanted them to go. This can be overwhelming at the start, especially for individuals who don’t feel confident designing.

While it can be easy to go overboard with the design elements using Wix’s editor, the drag-and-drop formatis really easy to get to grips with, regardless of your skill level. I found Wix to be very user-friendly, providing more freedom and opportunities to customize than the likes of Squarespace or GoDaddy.

To complement its impressive design options, Wix includes a vast number of built-in features with its plans – these are the best features of any website builder I’ve tested. For example, you can sell online with Wix Ecommerce, take appointments from customers with Wix Bookings, and grow your online presence with Wix’s SEO tools. Additionally, you can download third-party apps if you need further enhancements, such as Klaviyo for email marketing.

While you might need a higher-tier plan to access certain features, like unlimited storage space (available with the Business Elite plan), the majority of Wix’s features are included with the cheapest plan.

How Much Does Wix Cost?

You can get started with Wix’s free plan, but it does come with limitations, such as ads that make your site lack professionalism. That being said, you can stay on the free plan for as long as you’d like, so it’s a great place to familiarize yourself with Wix’s editor and dashboard before spending any money.

My Experience With Shopify

When I first got set up with Shopify, it immediately directed me towards adding products to my inventory, as opposed to the usual instruction of designing a website first. I highly recommend following this instruction because it’ll help to have products readily available when you start editing your pages.

The product page form is simple to fill out, and I made the most of Shopify Magic – Shopify’s AI tool which helps with text generation for product descriptions. This helps you save time during setup, and it’s easy to tweak if your products evolve.

Unfortunately, the design process with Shopify is a little complicated thanks to its section-based editor and limited free templates. Shopify and Squarespace are closely matched in a lot of our research areas, but when it comes to ease of use, Squarespace takes the lead without question since Shopify isn’t the most user-friendly builder.

Plus, Shopify has a heavy reliance on third-party apps, meaning additional costs can add up quickly, especially if you’re having to pay for a premium template as well.

Shopify offers a huge variety of payment options andunmatched sales features, such as multichannel integration so you can start selling on platforms like TikTok, as well as abandoned cart recovery to improve customer retention. Shopify’s suite of quality tools makes it ideal for businesses looking to sell online.

If you don’t want to sell products, you don’t need to shell out for a Shopify plan. But if you have a complex or large inventory – more than 10 products or so –  Shopify’s sales features and dedicated ecommerce resources are worth the price point.

And, as I already mentioned, Shopify’s app market is used to bolster its in-house offering, meaning merchants can pick and choose which features they need to grow and support their business.

How Much Does Shopify Cost?

Shopify’s three plans range from $29 to $299 per month (billed annually). This is considerably more expensive than other website builders, but that’s a consequence of Shopify’s ecommerce focus. For example, Squarespace’s ecommerce plans start at $23/mo.

Fortunately, you can try Shopify’s 3-day free trial to help you get to grips with the builder, and you can get your first month for just $1. Shopify is built with businesses in mind, so it won’t be the right fit if you don’t need to sell products. I recommend it for growing or expanding businesses, especially given the higher price point.

My Experience With Hostinger

Hostinger gave me a range of options to get started, but the three step AI website builder got me up and running in less than under 60 seconds. The form requested basic information like “Brand name” as well as a brief description of the website, and following a quick loading screen, Hostinger presented me with a tailored template to edit.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed by what Hostinger’s AI created – it lacked the quality and sleekness of Squarespace’s templates. That being said, it’s a great option if you’re looking to get online quickly.

Within the editor, I could add new elements or sections, such as galleries and contact forms. And, like Squarespace, Hostinger has a drag-and-drop editor that features a smart grid. However, the grid framework is only there to guide, so you still have the freedom to move elements anywhere you like, similar to Wix.

Hostinger has improved considerably since last year’s research, securing its new position in our top five thanks to its ease of use and AI features. I tried a few of these out for myself when building my test website. The AI Heatmap can give you a great visual indication of where visitors or customers are engaging with your site, and the AI Blog Generator is a beneficial resource if you want to boost your site’s content.

While its AI tools are fairly well-developed, it’s clear that Hostinger has prioritized these developments over other core functionalities or design options. For example, there are no email marketing tools which is surprising when that’s a standard website feature available from the other website builders in the list.

For core website features, including Hostinger’s AI website builder, you’ll be comfortable with the Premium plan. But, to unlock ecommerce features and AI tools, including the AI Text Generator and AI Heatmap, then you’ll need the Business Website Builder plan.

Unfortunately, Hostinger doesn’t offer a free plan but you can test the AI website builder using Hostinger’s 30-day free trial. When did you start using Hostinger? How long did it take to build a website?

I wanted to build a website for several reasons. I was highly passionate about watches and wanted an outlet to express my opinions. I want to help people understand more about watches and give exposure to those brands that offer quality at an affordable price point. I also wanted the learning experience of building my own website, as it is a valuable skill to have nowadays. I chose Hostinger because of its solid reviews, easy-to-use structure, and low starting prices. It’s easy to use and comes with lots of useful features, like a free domain registration.

I started using Hostinger in September 2023. It took me about three days to build my website. It was my first time using WordPress to build a website, so there was definitely a steep learning curve. The thing I like most about Hostinger is the custom email domain capabilities. You can very easily create multiple custom email addresses with your website’s domain as part of your plan. I have created

Backed by Google’s AI research and accessible for all shoppers in the United States, users now have a smarter way to shop online thanks to personalized product recommendations, price comparisons, and even virtual product try-ons through augmented reality.

What Are Google Shopping’s New Features?

The new features were based on data from Google’s Shopping Graph (featuring 45 billion product listings) paired with Gemini’s learning models. As a result, here are the useful tools that shoppers and store owners can take advantage of today:

  • AI-driven product briefs– When a shopper types a query into Google Shopping (e.g. “best winter boots for women”), they’ll receive an AI-generated brief that summarizes what they need to consider when looking for a product. For a winter boot, that might include weather-appropriate materials or a warm lining.
  • Improved categorization– Google has added dynamic filters to make it easier for shoppers to find specific products. Filters can be used for categories like location, availability, and color.
  • Price comparison – Shoppers are now able to compare prices from different companies and find the best deal for them.
  • Deals page – Users can click on a new “Deals” tab to browse personalized deals they may be interested in.
  • Virtual try-ons – Visual industries like fashion or beauty will benefit from the virtual try-ons feature. Through augmented reality, shoppers can try on specific products and see what they might look like. For instance, they could use their smartphone camera to try on a lipstick shade or necklace.

Within the Midwest wine market, we are unique because we produce a line of sparkling wines. They have become our most popular wines across the board!

We did not have any financial investors [when building the business], but we did hire one employee in the very beginning. Other than a few contractors to execute some of the building processes, everything was built from the ground up financially and physically. We really did most of the plumbing, electrical, flooring, drywall, fixtures, painting, etc. It was an incredibly hard but rewarding process, and now we are so thankful as it allows us to be in the stage we are in.

Our business has truly taken off with growth in every direction.

We started with three employees including me and my husband. Now, we have grown to a team of over twenty employees spreading across every facet of the business. We are penetrating new markets in the Midwest wine industry, and we recently earned the title of South Dakota’s largest vineyard and winery!

Running a Family Business

“While there are definitely difficulties, it has been amazing because we have gotten to be stay-at-home parents as our business is located below where we live. Our kids have learned the value of hard work because they have participated in every step of the journey with us. To give balance to work life and home life, we highly prioritize family time and getaways. Now, our daughter and son-in-law have returned to join in the family venture, and we love that this has always been a family business.”

A Passion for Work

Lisa: “I love crushing my goals every day, and I love that I am constantly learning new things while overcoming new challenges. One of the best parts about my work is building relationships with stores and customers on the daily.”

Jeremiah: “Between shipping and wine club, on-site visitors, and events, my job is so fun because there is so much variety and activity. From month to month, there are many different focuses from wine club and seasonal events to weddings during the summer, as well as vineyard requirements, and the different wines being made. Every day is so busy, challenging, and fun. Every day is very different!”

Things Are Really Grape: Business Successes

“From our establishment in 2014, we have always been a business built from our own immediate family. We have growth and have been very blessed with expansion capabilities to buy another eighty acres of land for vineyard, grown to sustain over twenty staff, and have recently undergone multiple vineyard, building, and product expansions.

With the Wind is currently producing about 5,000 cases per year and is set on track to increase to 10,000 cases within the next few years. Additionally, with our latest planting, we now grow almost 5,000 grapevines.

Our most recent success story is one of our favorites. This spring, with the addition of our newest vineyard, we have earned the title of South Dakota’s largest vineyard and winery! We are very proud of the work we and our team have put in.

Numerous accounts over the years have also been so fun and satisfying as we have become bestsellers in many of our stores, competing with national and worldwide brands!

It is the most amazing feeling when customers put back a national brand on the shelf after tasting our wines during in-store tastings.

One very proud moment for us was when one of our retailers ordered a sixteen-case purchase for an event back in our first year of business. We were so proud, and we framed the handwritten note order.

In the past six months, we launched our first sparkling wine, and it was ranked as the top seller at one of our retailers. It beat out international brands and was a very proud moment for us!”

Overcoming Challenges

“Truthfully, our greatest challenge has been our rural geographic area. We are located in the northeast corner of South Dakota, and it has both its strengths and weaknesses. While it is definitely rural, people are amazed at the peacefulness and the natural beauty that surrounds our area. We ship our wines all across the United States and are happy to be able to have the beauty of our area but still be able to access a customer base through shipping!”

Building a Website With Squarespace

“We chose to create our own website because we needed a way to reach people online. We originally had a website developer, but after that fell through, we needed a platform that would work for a novice to use. Squarespace’s professionalism appealed to us more than other platforms such as Wix. It had so many beautiful templates, and we have never regretted using Squarespace for a second.

We are currently on the Business plan because it is a good middle ground for us. It is cheaper than other plans but has all the features we need!

Not being an expert, there were certain things I was not aware of that we didn’t do right in the beginning. We have fixed those issues more recently and have dove into improving our SEO as well. As for managing and running events, we have found that many of our customers discover our upcoming events through the listing on our website which has been very helpful.

As we have hired marketing staff, Squarespace has seamlessly fit into our business even more. However, I would have loved to learn about SEO from Squarespace earlier in my journey. I find that part of the website builder is a little intimidating still.”

Scalability of Squarespace

“We feel we are still learning and perfecting our website. However, we are always looking for new innovations that will help us scale our business further.

Know that you will probably continue to change and improve your website, and that is okay! 

Work on taking one step at a time, and be patient with the progress. The more you work at it, the better your website will be! It’s a learning process I think we all should learn.”

Advice From the Experts

Lisa: “I think I would tell my younger self that everything will come together as it should. I would tell her to remember that all her prior life experiences will come into play perfectly when she owns a business. I would tell her to trust the process, and enjoy the journey knowing that everything will line up for the future!”

Jeremiah: “A financial strategy I will always live by is lean startup. We established With the Wind Winery with no help from investors, so we learned to be scrappy with our finances while still working to keep consumer perceptions as high as possible. Additionally, you have to learn as you go, from your market, products, etc. Stay flexible and listen to those around you. That has been our mantra that we always tell people.”

Future Plans

“We have many upcoming goals and future plans including installing a commercial kitchen for serving food this winter, doubling our production over the next couple years, planting another eighty acres of vineyard, distributing further into the Midwest as well as nationally, and preparing ourselves for the next generation to come in. We have a lot of goals and are excited to see where the upcoming stages take us!”
