There are several legitimate concerns when starting. Whatever the case may be, we recommend using a website builder as the easiest way to create your personal site. I’ve created this comprehensive step-by-step guide to teach you exactly how to get your personal website up and running in no time.

Why Do I Need a Personal Website?

It’s less about what a personal website is and rather what a personal website does. They’re a way to show the world who you are, what you can do, and why you do it.

Think of it like an online dictionary definition of yourself. If someone was searching up your name and your personal website came up (as it should), it should reflect everything there is to know about you and your work.

And, depending on your work, the website will change. Writers may want to prioritize blogging while artists will need a website builder with plenty of gallery and image options. Your website is the online representation of yourself, so take some time to consider how you want to put yourself out there.

Step 1: Secure a Domain

Once you’re set on the path of creating a website, there’s an important step that has to be taken first: securing your domain name. This is the address at the top of the search engine and is very important in helping others find your website.

The best advice for personal websites is to use your own name. It’s super clear who the website belongs to, it’s easy to remember, and it looks more professional overall.

The next step is to search for it in a domain registrar. We recommend using sites like Domain.com and NameCheap, where you’ll pay an annual fee of around $10 to $15 per year. Website builders like Wix or GoDaddy often offer a free domain for a year when you build with them, and you can always connect a third-party domain if you’ve already purchased one.

But, what of the Muhammads and John Smiths of the world? If your name has already been taken from a domain registrar, what can you do? The first step would be to add relevant keywords: put blog or artist at the end to make it more specific (this also helps with SEO and getting your site seen by more people).

If you’re still having trouble and can’t use your name, you may have to develop something original. In that case, here’s some quick guidelines for picking a domain name:

  • Short and simple: a concise domain name is easier to remember
  • Easy to spell and pronounce: avoid complex or uncommon terms
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers: it’s harder to remember and type in
  • Consider the extension: select a domain extension (.com, .org, .net, etc.) that fits your website’s purpose and target audience nicely
  • Research trademark and copyright issues: make sure you’re not infringing on any existing trademarks or copyrights

Step 2: Choose a Website Builder

Once your domain is secured, now’s the time to pick your website builder. It’s here that you’ll pick a template, fill your site with content, generate traffic, and continue to update and upgrade your website once it’s published. A big decision!

Step 3: Find a Template You Love

Now that you’ve chosen your website builder, it’s time to pick a template. A template is a pre-made website design you can edit and customize as little or as much as you want. They’re useful for showing you how a website should look – but whether you follow their example is up to you.

Most website builders today have two options for templates: you can either pick from a selection of pre-made templates across a range of industries or have a custom template generated for you thanks to AI.

The debate of editor vs ADI is a long one. With an AI-generated template, you skip all the indecision and get something generated for your exact needs. Simply answer a short questionnaire about what industry you’re in and the name of your website and the AI does the rest. However, from our first-hand experience, these AI sites are never as strong design-wise as some of the professionally designed templates available on the likes of Wix and Squarespace.

What matters is what looks best to you – and the purpose of your personal website. If you need it to look professional, then perhaps a super flashy template won’t look the best. On the flip side, a dull website isn’t going to showcase your artistic ability the way one designed by the artist will.

Step 4: Add Your Website’s Content

All the pieces are in place – now is the time for actual website building! Once you’re in the editor, you’ll get a choice of various elements to add to your website. Depending on your website builder, the choices can be overwhelming and, in all honesty, a little scary.

But don’t be intimidated! We can walk you through the optimal way to create your site and make sure you don’t get an indecision episode:

1. Add Static Content First

Before you begin uploading work, set up the pages you need first. We recommend a Contact Us page with all of your details and an About Me page that tells people a little about you. Once these pages are done, it’ll be easier to plan the rest of the site around them.

2. Upload Your Best Work

Once the structure of your site is finished, you can start adding your work. Try and organize it in an easy-to-navigate way, utilizing drop-down menus and shortcuts.

3. Proper Text Formatting

Make sure you use headings and sub-headings when writing copy on your site. It’s not only good for readability but for SEO as well. Additionally, don’t go overboard with the copy either. Too much text may drive visitors away.

4. Don’t Go Crazy

Too many elements on one page might slow your website down, ruining someone’s visit and potentially impacting your search result ranking, as site speed is a major factor in SEO. Visual clarity is king for websites, so try not to overstuff your site with unnecessary features (if you can resist the temptation!).

5. Mobile Devices

You can’t guarantee what technology people will be visiting your site from. Over 60% of all internet traffic comes from mobile devices, so you must cater to them. Try visiting your site once it’s published on other devices to see if it looks good. If not, back to the editor!

Step 5: Get Your Website Seen

Once your website is all ready, you can press publish and have your site live on the internet. Amazing…now what? Well, now you’ve got to try and get people to visit your website!

If you’ve been following our guide closely, your website should already be fairly optimized for SEO, but there are a few extra things you can do to really boost it, such as adding alt text to the images on your site. It’s super important to always be monitoring these things since SEO affects where you show up on the search results page – you wouldn’t want someone else’s site appearing ahead of you!

If you want to take a more active approach to getting traffic to your site, many website builders have several marketing tools you can use to attract people, such as:

Posting to social media is important to start building your online presence. Add your new website to existing profiles, start promoting, and even cross-post content across multiple social channels. Keep it updated with new information (or, if you’re blogging, post regular content).

Relevant Links

Seeking out links back to your personal website from trustworthy and noteworthy publications isn’t just good for publicity – it’s great for helping your website rank for relevant terms in search engine results, too!

Optimize Your Visuals for SEO

Search engine optimization, or SEO, covers all of the things you can do to make your photography blog rank better in Google results. There are a few SEO basics specifically related to images that will be particularly useful for a photo-heavy blog, such as:

  • Using relevant file names: Automatically-generated file names, such as IMG_2348, are not good for SEO because they don’t give search engines any information about a photo. Try to give your images relevant names instead – for example, a portrait could be named “girl smiling” or similar.
  • Adding alt tags: Alt tags are descriptions of your image that are used to help anyone using a screen reader to tell what is being depicted. They’re very important for accessibility, and they also give search engines more context about each picture.
  • Compressing images: Compression is a part of the image optimization process that we mentioned earlier, and it makes images easier to load – thus improving your website’s speed.

Promote Your Photography Blog

Once you’ve got your blog all set up, it’s time to promote it so that you can showcase your work and attract interested followers.

Social media is one important way you can promote your blog. Instagram in particular is great for photographers because you can grab people’s attention by posting your best work there. You can put the link to your blog in your Instagram bio to drive traffic to your site.

Your domain name is how people will find your business website online, so make it count. Since it’s one of the first things people see, ensure that it’s clear, catchy, and memorable (just like our own domain, “websitebuilderexpert.com”).

But how do you get a domain? Well, some website builders let you access a free domain for your first year. For instance, Wix’s paid plans include a free domain for 1 year, letting you choose from suffixes like “.com” or “.net”.

However, at renewal, you’ll need to pay an annual fee ranging from $20-$70to keep your domain running. This gives you two options: you could either stick with your website builder and pay the annual fee, or switch to a domain name registrar for more choice.

Domain name registrars are great if you’re looking for flexible pricing options. I recommend Domain.com, since it has a large number of domain suffixes to choose from.

Domain.com had some unique domain suffixes I hadn’t seen anywhere else, like “.ai”. If you need a specific domain ending for your business, you’ll find it there. Source: Website Builder Expert

As a general rule of thumb, I suggest opting for a “.com” suffix if it’s available. This is because it’s the most recognisable and professional domain ending. If you think of one of the biggest brands in the world, it’s likely that their website ends with “.com”. If you’re using Domain.com, this suffix costs $11.99 for the first year and rises to $21.99 per year at renewal.

How Do I Come Up With a Good Domain Name?

Struggling to choose a domain name? Here are three key tips to help you out:

  1. Is it short?Effective domain names are between 6-14 characters long. Names that are too long are trickier for users to type down, making it difficult to access your website.
  2. Does it make sense?Your domain should have a logical connection to your website. For instance, “booking.com” tells you exactly what the website is for (holiday bookings).
  3. Are there unnecessary characters?Avoid using numbers or hyphens since this can make your domain look messy.

If you already have a business name, it’s best practice to make it your domain name too (if it’s available). This is so pre-existing customers who are already familiar with your brand can easily access your website. For instance, if your business name is “best domains”, you could easily convert that into “bestdomains.com” or “bestdomains.org.”

2. Create a Business Email Address

Though you don’t need a business email address to set up your website, it will help you establish a professional presence online and leave website visitors with an easy way to contact you. Conveniently, business emails are easy to create, with a number of free and paid options available.

For best results, I recommend Google Workspace. Though it’s no longer free to use, you can create your own professional email from as little as $6 per month (billed annually),while its 14-day free trialwill help you try before you buy.

If you get an email with Google Workspace, you’ll also receive additional features depending on your plan. What Does a Good Business Email Look Like?

The best business email addresses end with the name of your business. In fact, you can have multiple email addresses for different areas of your business, so long as they end the same way:

Each of these emails clearly indicate what they’re used for, also ending with the name of the business. I know that I could contact “[email protected]to receive information on a specific query and that it’ll be sent to the correct company.

Make sure any business email addresses are easily discoverable from your website, newsletters, and social media pages. This is so customers know how to contact you!

3. Identify the Right Website Builder for You

Now for the serious part: choosing the right website builder for your business. Since there’s so much choice, I’ve decided to highlight only two website builders that we found were excellent solutions for small businesses during our research and testing. Once you’ve found a website builder you’re interested in, you need to look at the pricing plans available and see which one is best for you. To give you an idea of the kinds of plans on the market, we’ve broken down the costs for Shopify and Wix.

Shopify’s three main plans range between $29-$299 per month (billed annually). They all come with powerful sales features, such as point of sale to integrate in-person sales with your store, analytics to track your store’s progress with, and the ability to sell unlimited products.

Though Shopify’s plans seem expensive at first, the powerful sales features – such as substantial shipping discounts on your postage costs – do make up for it. If you have a store you’d love to scale online, this is the way to do it. Source: Website Builder Expert

To test out Shopify’s features, you only have a 3-day free trial. However, you can also access your first month for $1 – an inexpensive way to give the platform a spin!

For smaller businesses, I recommend the Basic plan priced at $29 per month (billed annually).You’ll still receive powerful sales features, while it’s also a brilliant starting point for new businesses who anticipate growth further down the road. For instance, you’ll have access to 3 international markets, helping you dip your toes into selling overseas.

As your business expands, you could switch to the Shopify plan at $79 per month (billed annually). On this plan, you’ll receive upgraded features such as increased discounts on your shipping costs, alongside the ability to add additional accounts for your staff members.

In contrast, Wix’s premium plans, which range from $17-$159 per month (billed annually), are all suitable options for creating your business website. However, I would recommend the Core plan for a great balance between affordability and the quality of features. 

Costing $29 per month (billed annually), on this plan you’ll unlock website analytics, 50GB storage space, the ability for website visitors to create accounts, and a site chat that prospects can use to message you.

It takesonly 50 milliseconds for visitors to form an opinion on your website. If your design is messy or littered with pop-ups, people are more likely to leave. Fortunately, most website builders come with numerous templates to choose from that are both practical and stylish.

As soon as a visitor enters your website, your business branding should be as clear as day. Make sure that your unique tone of voice, font style, color schemes, and imagery are consistent across your website.

It’s not all about looks. Your template should also be equipped with key features that will enhance the user experience:

  • Contact forms – These make it easy for prospects to get in touch with you. You could add a form to your landing page, “Contact Us” page, or both.
  • Testimonials– Customer reviews add social proof to your website. You could feature testimonials from previous customers, or let website visitors add their own reviews. This is especially useful if you’re selling a product or service, since a positive review can be the difference between someone buying an item or leaving it in their cart.
  • Call to action buttons – When a visitor browses your website, what’s the main thing you want them to do? Is it to sign up to your newsletter? Or purchase a product? Whatever it is, you can use eye-catching CTA buttons to inspire visitors to take the actions you want them to.
  • Search bar– Visitors may come onto your business page to look for something specific, so you can give them a helping hand by adding a search bar to your website.
  • Navigation bar – If you have multiple pages on your business website, you need to help visitors get from point A to point B. That’s where a navigation bar comes in handy. Whether you opt for a horizontal or dropdown navigation bar, it should enhance the user experience by keeping website navigation simple.

Once you’ve set the foundation of your website – your template – you can start filling it with useful business content. This includes going through your website and replacing the placeholder content that the website builder has added with your own. But what needs to be included?

First of all, you may want to add different pages to your website. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • About Us” page – To build trust with potential customers, you need an “About Us” page. Use it to let visitors know more about your business, its goals, and most importantly, the person or team behind the brand. This is your chance to reach out to potential customers, so make sure your words count.
  • Contact Us” page – If a website visitor is inspired to reach out, they’ll no doubt head to your “Contact Us” page. On this page, you should include key ways for prospects to get in touch with you, such as your email address, physical address, phone number, external social media accounts, and even a contact form for specific enquiries.
  • FAQ page– This page should be filled with valuable information for your audience, providing them with quick answers to commonly asked questions. When filling in this page, put yourself in the shoes of your target audience. What will they need guidance on?
  • Products page– Opening an ecommerce site? If that’s a yes, then you need a dedicated products page. On this page, you could list featured products, or your entire inventory that users can filter via variants like “colors” or “sizes” or specific categories like “shoes” or “bags.”
  • Services page– If you’re offering services, you’ll need a page listing exactly what you offer. For instance, a beauty salon owner may want to list the services they provide (french manicures, blow outs, etc) alongside a detailed description and prices. You could also install your bookings functionality on this page, letting visitors book their next appointment once they’ve scanned through each service.
  • Bookings page– Whether you’re a beauty professional offering treatments or a financial expert offering consultations, a bookings page will be the hub for all things appointments. On this page, you can integrate your website builder’s booking tool to get started. Wix has a built-in booking tool that’s accessible on the Core plan and above, while Shopify’s app store has free and paid booking integrations to install on your website.

6. Integrate The Key Website Features You Need

When creating a business website, you also need to add additional functionality to your page. Some platforms, such as Shopify, come with an app market where you can install apps onto your website. They cover a variety of functionalities, ranging from social media integrations and testimonials to live chat bots or Google maps.

For instance, there are thousands of Shopify apps to choose from. When setting up my test store, I could use filters to browse through Shopify’s selection and find appropriate apps for my store. Though many apps required payments to use, some came with free trials and free plans. Because of these varying prices, you can find apps that fulfill your business’ needs and are still suitable for your budget.

On the other hand, website builders can also come with a large number of built-in features. Wix is a brilliant example of this. Though Wix has its own app store, it also offers numerous in-built tools your business can take advantage of. Here are three that could be useful for your business:

  1. Wix Hotels – Announced in Wix’s April Review, this hospitality solution lets hotel businesses easily manage their services in one place. You can accept reservations and payments, manage rooms, and connect your business with websites like Booking.com.
  2. Wix Restaurants– In the restaurant industry? If so, you can use Wix Restaurants to create an appropriate website for your business. This feature comes with professional menus to showcase your dishes and beverages, and the ability to take and manage orders online.
  3. Wix Bookings – Be it group sessions, classes, or intro calls, you can use Wix Bookings to set up appointments through your business website. You can also accept payments from clients, send out email or SMS reminders to attendees, and update your schedule via your booking calendar.

When looking at website features, I encourage you to check out marketing tools too. From email marketing to social media integration, these tools will help you grow your online presence and introduce your business to new audiences online. These are the key marketing features to look out for:

1. Social media marketing – Since platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram are home to over one billion monthly active users, you need to grow your business on social media too and tap into this huge user base.

Both Wix and Shopify make it easy to connect your business website with social media. For instance, Wix lets you create and share content on other social platforms like Facebook, and add links to your social media platforms on your website through social bars. These social bars feature social media icons that link out to your other pages.

Meanwhile, Shopify is well known for its multichannel selling opportunities. You can connect your store with TikTok and sell your products there, or access its Starter plan – priced at $5 per month (billed annually) –  and sell on social media accounts without the need for a storefront.

2. Email marketing– According to our email marketing stats, 99% of users check their inboxes every day! Make sure your business appears in your customers’ inboxes by investing in email marketing. Both Shopify and Wix come with powerful email marketing tools.To get you started, you’ll find a variety of templates and customization options that help you create emails designed to impress.

Depending on your business, you could send out company updates, product updates, news on special events or webinars, special discounts codes, or intel on industry-related news stories.

3. Search engine optimization –an effective SEO strategy will ensure that your business website is visible on search engines.

When a user searches up a keyword or query that’s related to your business, you’ll want your website to appear in the search results. For example, if you’re a pet grooming business, you could target the keywords “pet groomer” or “mobile pet grooming” and see if you appear in Google.

If you’re new to SEO, there are free online tools that can help. For instance, I recommend downloading Keyword Surfer, a free Chrome extension that will assist you in finding the right keywords to target. It not only shows you relevant keywords for a search, but it also shows you how many times each keyword is searched for every month.

7. Optimize, Test, and Publish Your Website

You may be dying to publish your business website, but there are still two crucial things to do before going live: optimizing and testing out your website. The former step will ensure your business page is set up for search engines, while the latter will guarantee that your website works and provides visitors with a positive user experience.

Thankfully, these key steps aren’t as intimidating as you might think. When it comes to optimization, I recommend spending some time adding your chosen keywords into your website copy, making sure yourwebsite load times are speedy, and seeing if your page is mobile-friendly.All of these factors influence your website’s ranking on search engines, so make sure it’s all running smoothly.

Once you’ve optimized your site, you can then conduct your final tests. You need to test your website thoroughly and ensure that there are no glaring errors. As a starting point, look out for these common issues:

  • Broken links – Ensure that your website links work, especially if you have important call to action buttons placed throughout your page. For instance, you wouldn’t want to miss out on a sale because a customer clicked on a “Buy Now” button that led to a “404 Error” page.
  • Missing images – No one wants to see blank spaces where a vibrant image should have been. Go through each page of your website and make sure that all of your photos load fully. If they don’t, you may need to double check the media’s origin or optimize your photos to a lower file size.

Our top ecommerce website builders for 2024 range from $20.99 to $299 per month (billed annually). These plans are pricier than general website builder plans since you get access to sales features, like abandoned cart recovery, as well as additional support for your online store.

Can You Build a Website for Free?

You can build a website for free which is great for anyone on a tight budget. That said, I recommend upgrading to a premium plan as soon as possible to distance yourself from the limitations of a free plan. The most common of these include:

  • Ads displayed on your website – this can make you look unprofessional or amateurish
  • A preset domain name, such as www.accountname.wixsite.com/siteaddress
  • Basic features which usually include low storage and bandwidth allowances
  • No ecommerce functionality so you can’t sell online

Using a free website builder is great for testing, but little else – you can play around in the editor and try the builder’s features to see if it’s the right fit for you. It’s also a great opportunity to improve your building skills without any financial pressure. Still, you’ll want to upgrade to a paid plan to unlock advanced features and remove ads.

Web Hosting Costs

Hosting is an essential cost that can’t be overlooked. Luckily, website builders are a handy all-in-one solution since they include web hosting with your plan – this means you don’t need to source or manage your site’s hosting. If you use a platform like WordPress, you’ll have to pay for web hosting separately.

Here’s a quick breakdown of web hosting costs:

  • Using a website builder – $0
  • Using WordPress – $2.95+ per month

There’s an overwhelming number of web hosting providers out there, so we’ve tested the very best to help you find a suitable host for your website. Overall, Bluehost is our top-rated option, with pricing starting from $2.95 per month. It’s even recommended by WordPress.

For basic shared hosting, you can expect costs between $1 and $25 per month – most websites start on this type of hosting since it’s the cheapest and often includes a free domain name and SSL certificate. However, it’s also the least reliable and security can be rocky, so if you want better resources for your site, VPS hosting ranges from roughly $2 to $230 per month. Dedicated hosting plans start from around $50-150 per month, but these higher prices will only be necessary if you’re hosting a very large website.

Domain Names

Another key element when building a website is getting a domain name – a custom domain name is a great way to build brand recognition and site awareness. Some website builders include a custom domain name for free (usually for the first year of your plan), but you’ll eventually need to pay to keep your domain name registered.

  • With selected website builder or web host – $0 for the first year
  • Standard domain cost – $10+ per year

Domain names vary in price depending on your registrar, such as GoDaddy or NameCheap, the TLD (meaning the .com part of the address), and how popular the domain name is. For example, short and common word domains, such as ai.com, sold for millions of dollars in 2023! For a general .com domain name, you can expect to pay around $10 to $20, at least for the first year.

Should You Hire a Web Designer?

While website builders make it possible for both beginners and experienced builders to get online, only some have the time or desire to build a website themselves. If you’ve got the budget, you can hire a web designer to do the heavy lifting.

So, how much should a web designer cost? This is the hardest price to estimate because it varies depending on a designer’s rates – it could set you back a few hundred dollars upfront, with additional fees for ongoing maintenance. Typically, web designers charge around $50 to $200 per hour.

GoDaddy revealed its Essential Web Design Service in November 2023, offering small businesses a professionally-made four-page website for a one-time fee of $499.99.

Lots of things can impact the cost of hiring a web designer, such as complexity, the number of pages, and whether or not you want them to build the site from scratch or rework an existing template. And you’ll have to pay more if you want them to maintain your site long-term.

There’s the danger of paying too little with a web designer and getting a poor website as a result, so make sure you have the budget to hire a suitably skilled designer for your needs. If you’re tight for cash, a website builder is the more affordable option.

Hire a web designer if:

️ You’re building a complex or large website

️ You’re short on time – you can prioritize other tasks or work while a web designer handles your website

️ You’re looking to build a custom website – website builder customers are using the same designs and resources, so a web designer can craft something unique

️ You lack technical or design skills

  • Apps – You may want or need to install and pay for third-party integrations, and some features, such as Squarespace’s Acuity Scheduling tool cost extra to use (starting from $16/mo)
  • Security – Most website builders provide security measures for free, such as fraud detection for payments and free SSL certificates, but these will be added costs if you opt to use WordPress
  • Content – If you don’t feel comfortable writing your content or creating imagery and videos yourself, then you’ll need to hire a professional to handle the work
  • SEO – SEO experts can help optimize your website for search engines but this can set you back around $50 to $150 per hour, so I recommend relying on your website builder’s built-in SEO tools and learning resources (such as Wix’s SEO Learning Hub)
  • Maintenance – You’ll want to track your website’s performance with tools like Google Analytics or alternatives to GA4 and make improvements where necessary

You need to spend your time and money wisely to get the best results – but the good news is you don’t need a huge budget to create a beautiful website. Of course, the bigger your budget, the more you can spend on additional functionality and templates, but this won’t be necessary for smaller or personal sites.

Here are my expert tips to save money when creating a website:

  • Think about present needs first – will you need every feature right away or can you pick a cheaper plan to start with? Can you upgrade down the line when you have a bigger budget to play with?
  • Use a website builder – choosing a cheap website builder is the most cost-effective way to get your website up and running
  • Don’t pay for extra features you don’t need – like Goldilocks, you want to find a website builder and plan that’s just right which means not overpaying for extra features you won’t use and not limiting yourself by choosing a cheap but restrictive plan
  • Choose a free template – there are plenty of beautiful templates available that don’t come with a hefty price tag in addition to your website builder plan
  • Use available resources and guides – make the most of online resources to upskill and improve your building knowledge (plenty of website builders have help centers full of tutorials, video lessons, and courses)

The best website builder on the market, Wix comes with brilliant features you can use when creating your booking website. Its Wix ADI tool can generate an AI-driven website template based on your needs, while you can also add a number of integrations to your booking page through its bustling app store.

Wix is also a suitable platform for hotels. In Wix’s April Review, it unveiled its new hospitality solution Wix Hotels. If you own a hotel business, you can now accept payments and reservations in one place, or connect your business with popular websites like Booking.com.

Squarespace Summary

Squarespace is a brilliant fit for design-conscious business owners.Boasting the most stylish templates on the market mixed with great design tools and a drag-and-drop editor, this builder makes it easy to look professional online.

It also comes with Acuity Scheduling, a built-in booking system, so you can set up appointments as soon as you choose your template.

Because Squarespace is also theeasiest website builder to use, I recommend this platform for one-person businesses.Even if you have limited time or resources to dedicate to your booking website, setting up won’t be difficult due to its user-friendly interface, and you’ll also encounter some useful onboarding tutorials along the way.

What Do You Need in a Booking Website Builder?

Need help choosing a website builder? If that’s the case, spend some time assessing each platform and exploring the features they offer. Do these features fulfill your unique needs?

Here are some features to look out for:

  • Calendar syncing– Busy schedule? If you anticipate plenty of bookings, then you’ll need a way to showcase your availability. Many scheduling integrations, including Wix Bookings, offer ways to sync your Google Calendars with your website.
  • Streamlined payment systems– To watch the money roll in, look for scheduling tools that let you accept payments online via credit cards, digital wallets, and invoicing.
  • Automations – If your schedule is jam-packed, automations can help you manage it. Search for automations that can speed up the process, like automatic emails that remind customers of upcoming bookings or payments.
  • Staff management tools – Part of a larger business? If so, you’ll need a booking system that can integrate multiple staff members with your website. See if the platform lets you add staff calendars for each member of your team.
  • Video conferencing – If you will be face to face with plenty of remote clients, your website builder must allow video conferencing. Squarespace’s Acuity Scheduling has this feature and lets you integrate Zoom and JoinMe with your booking website.

Which Pricing Plan Do I Need?

To enable Bookings on Wix, you need the Core plan, which is priced at $29 per month when billed annually.It lets you install the Wix Bookings app, offering the ability to offer unlimited services and sync your personal calendars to your dashboard. Overall, it gives you a great range of booking features for a reasonable monthly cost.

On the Core plan, you can send 50 SMS notifications a month to your contacts. However, if you want to send a greater number of texts, you need to upgrade to the Business or Business Elite plans. For instance, the Business plan, priced at $36 per month when billed annually, lets you send 100 SMS notifications a month.

Wix’s pricing page has a section dedicated to its booking features. I was looking for ways to integrate socials and found out that you can connect multiple channels – great if you have pre-existing social media platforms you’d like to connect with your site. Source: Website Builder Expert

Once you’ve bought the Core plan or above, you’ll be able to download Wix Bookings from the app store and integrate it with your website!

But what about Squarespace? Our research shows that its plans are great value for money, varying between $16-$52 per month when billed annually.However, for a professional business page where you can take bookings, I recommend the Business plan at $23 per month when billed annually.

It comes with great ecommerce features that will complement your bookings page nicely. For instance, customers will be able to create accounts on your website, while you can create pop-ups and banners to promote new services you offer.

To access bookings, you’ll need to purchase Squarespace’s Acuity Scheduling tool, which comes at an additional cost. Ranging from $16-$49 per month when billed annually,you’ll be able to sync your calendars with your website and set up your payment settings.

I saw that all of the Acuity Scheduling plans come with invoicing and automatic reminder emails. Since all of these tools are in one place, I felt confident about managing my booking website through this tool. Source: Website Builder Expert

Squarespace Acuity’s cheapest option, the Emerging plan, is ideal if you’re at the helm of a one-person company.This means you might hold appointments or classes, run regular services such as live entertainment or beauty treatments, or frequently hold meetings for your freelance business.

However, you may need the Growing or Powerhouse plan if you’re a part of a wider team. For instance, the Powerhouse plan, at $49 per month when billed annually,lets you set up multiple time zones for different staff members and locations – great if your operations are run in multiple areas!

2. Create a Domain Name

At first glance, a domain name may only seem like a small aspect of your website, but it’s much more than that. It’s the main way users will find you online.For that reason, you need to come up with a memorable primary domain to make sure your page is accessible for  public use.

Though most website builder plans come with a free domain, these typically last for one year only. Once your plan has run out, the domain will be charged. These prices can range from $20-$70 per year, depending on the platform you’re using.

For more flexibility with your pricing, you can research different domain name registrars to see who offers the best deals. Domain.com is a great example. On its website, I found offers for various domains that would suit a variety of businesses. For instance, a classic “.com” domain is $11.99 for your first year, but rises to $21.99 per year at renewal.

How Do I Create a Strong Domain Name?

Now that you know where to get a domain from, it’s time to choose a strong domain name.

This section will be most relevant to you if you haven’t come up with a business name yet. If you already have one, it’s best practice to make this your domain too, since you most likely have an existing customer base who are already familiar with it.

Without further ado, here are four tips to creating a strong domain name.

  1. Is it short?The name “www.thisisaveryverylongwebsitename.com” isn’t particularly appealing. Though it does exactly what it says on the box, it will be tedious for users to type out. Instead, think of iconic brands like “ebay.com” or “www.levis.com” – short, sweet, and memorable.
  2. Is it catchy?Like you would with a jingle or a tagline, make sure your domain is catchy so website visitors will remember it. As an example, “pinterest.com” is memorable as it blends the words “pin” and “interest” to create something entirely unique!
  3. Is it easy for users to type out? To ensure users can easily type out your domain, ignore numbers, hyphens, and too many similar letters.
  4. Does it have a keyword?Depending on your industry, you could try to add a keyword to your domain. For instance, if you’re a yoga instructor, you’ll probably want the word “yoga” somewhere.

3. Pick and Customize Your Template

Now for the fun part: your website’s unique design. According to our landing page statistics, your landing page will have a 160% higher conversion rate than other areas of your website. To keep users on your page, ensure that its design is both attractive andeasy to navigate.

Here’s what every strong website design needs:

  • A strong tone of voice – Is your website sophisticated or playful? Authoritative or friendly? Your copywriting should reflect your brand’s identity. To create your tone of voice, think about your target audience and how they’d like to be spoken to.
  • An eye-catching font– What do American Apparel, Jeep, and JCPenny have in common? A distinctive font. In fact, all of these brands use the font Helvetica! To find your ideal font, research current typography trends, see what other brands are using, and then explore which style best suits your brand.
  • Evocative colors – Colors are associated with emotions. Because of this, you need to consider which colors best represent the way you want your website visitors to feel. If you’re offering fashion consultations, you could choose black to evoke luxury or sophistication. Or, if you offer business consultations, you could choose blue for trust and security.

On top of your website’s visuals, you need to add elements to your website that’ll help users find what they’re looking for. If you’re browsing a website builder’s template library, here are some key booking website features to watch out for:

  • Navigation bars –If your booking website has multiple pages – such as “about us”, “services”, and “contact us” –  you need to ensure that users can easily switch between them. The quickest way to do this is by adding a website navigation Luckily, most website builder templates come with this feature.
  • Booking widgets –How do you want users to book services on your website? Whether you want them to fill in contact forms, or click on a calendar on your landing page, look for a platform with a variety of booking widgets.
  • Video Hosting –To showcase your services in another light, you could always add  a video that introduces, explains, or showcases your services. For that, you’ll need to make sure your website builder allows video hosting.

4. Upload Your Website’s Content

Once you’ve chosen your template, you can start filling your website with content. But what should you include? Think about your target audience’s needs and ask yourself whether these features will be useful to them.

I’ve listed some pointers below:

  • About Us Page– Here you can add background information on your brand’s story and mission statement.
  • Services – Showcase your services by creating a bookings page. You can include important details like location, pricing, and dates.
  • Social media links – Already have a Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok account for your business? Add social media icons to your page so users on your website can access these profiles too.
  • Automated chat box– You can’t be at your website 24/7, so it’s worth adding an automated chat box that can respond to messages. Oftentimes, these chat boxes will notify you when someone interacts with your website.
  • Testimonials– Adding genuine reviews to your website builds trust. If previous customers show approval of your services, then more people will be inspired to book a service themselves. You could add customer quotes, star reviews, and even photos (always ask for permission first), or install an app that allows customers to upload their own reviews themselves.
  • Privacy Policy – Comply with website regulations by adding a Privacy Policy to your website. It tells users exactly what you intend to do with their information.
  • SEO targeted copy– When writing your website copy, ensure you’re targeting the appropriate keywords. For instance, if “nail art” is your unique selling point, then you need to make sure this keyword is in your website headings and service descriptions.

5. Install the Booking Integration

Depending on your website builder, there are different ways to add appointment functionalities to your page. Since we’ve mentioned Wix and Squarespace already, here’s how you can add bookings to both platforms.

Wix Bookings

Setting up Wix Bookings was easy – I went onto the app store and installed the tool in one click. Afterwards, Wix redirected me to my dashboard, where I could now access a new “catalog” section. Here, I was able to add new services onto my website, from private appointments to group sessions.

For my fitness bookings website, I could add new classes from scratch or by editing the different kinds of services listed on the page. These suggestions were all relevant to my test website’s business, like the personal training and open gym! Source: Website Builder Expert

Once I had added my services, I could explore a myriad of other features. I could click on the “bookings calendar” tab to see my work schedule, set up and manage the work hours of staff members, and edit my default hours so customers know when I’m available each week. All of these features will help you manage your business effectively, so you can run each service without a hitch.

Acuity Scheduling

In contrast to Wix Bookings, Acuity Scheduling is already built into Squarespace. In other words, you don’t need to install an app to set it up. After I had chosen my template, I located the “Scheduling” tab from the left sidebar and began to fill in details such as my scheduling page URL and first appointment type.

I was taken through a straightforward, step-by-step process, beginning with naming my scheduling page to entering my availability for each week. All of the key features, such as appointment invoicing and client lists, are kept in one area of your website, so it’s really easy to organize and maintain your business over a long period of time.

Is There Anything Else I Should Set Up?

Before you dive into testing and publishing your website, double check to see if you also have these key features installed:

  • Do you have payments enabled?If you’re offering paid services, you need a way to accept payments online. For instance, both Wix and Squarespace have their own all-in-one payment solution, letting you accept payments from major credit and debit card companies. Wix gives you the widest variety of payment options, with over 80 payment methods worldwide.
  • Are you offering gift cards?If so, Wix Bookings lets you sell gift cards from your website. Customers can purchase custom amounts and send them to friends and family, enabling the recipient to book one of your services. Meanwhile, you can’t get gift cards with Squarespace, but you can offer special packages for clients. As an example, you could offer their fifth booking for free after four appointments.

6. Test and Publish Your Website

So you’ve spent hours putting your website together and it’s almost time to hit publish. But before you do, there’s one step you can’t avoid: testing your website. This will help you spot any website errors that could negatively impact users, and gives you time to smooth these problems out before going live.

These are some areas of your booking website to keep an eye on:

  1. Is your website slow?According to our website load time stats, 82% of consumers say that slow loading times impact their purchasing decisions. With this in mind, don’t forget to test your website’s loading times. You don’t want a customer to feel frustrated and close your bookings page! You can help speed up your website by optimizing images. To achieve this, you’ll need to find the sweet spot between lower file sizes and high-quality imagery, so feel free to experiment with image compressing tools before hitting publish.

If there’s anything you should focus on, it has to be your website’s SEO. When you create website copy, you’ll need to target the right keywords to ensure your website appears on search engines.

The keywords you choose should be intuitive and relate back to your business. For instance, a private tutor offering singing lessons could target keywords such as “singing lessons,” “singing teacher,” “vocal coach,” or “voice lessons.”

To help you come up with these keywords, put yourself in the shoes of your target audience. Think about what they’d need to search for on Google to find your service.  

For additional help, you could also consult a free SEO tool. My personal favorite is Keyword Surfer, a free extension you can add to Google Chrome. When you enter a specific search query into Google, it’ll show you related keywords alongside their overall search volume – perfect for beginners and seasoned SEO professionals alike!

2. Email Marketing

Keep customers in the loop by setting up email marketing. For instance, if you’re in hospitality, you could set up hotel newsletters and notify your contacts about upcoming events, loyalty schemes, or even seasonal discount codes.

If you opt for either Wix and Squarespace, both of these platforms offer built-in email marketing tools. But if you’d prefer to use a third-party company, like Mailchimp, you could also download an email marketing integration from Wix or Squarespace’s app store.

If you have plenty of expertise in your industry, consider adding a blogging platform to your booking page. This way, you can showcase your knowledge to your audience and build trust with new website visitors who come across your content.

With Wix, for instance, I could install the Wix Blog integration from the app store in one click. Once I added it to the site, I could access my blog page from the editor and start creating my first post.

If you opt for a blog, remember to enable commenting and social media sharing. Commenting lets your audience engage with your content and spark industry-related discussions, while social media sharing lets visitors share your work with audiences on other platforms (and who knows who will see it?)
